One can give a fellow player charity to get them back in the game after losing items, but you can't give them their character back. Like some people have already said - If I found my characters deleted at this stage, I'm not sure I'd bother coming back.
I can certainly see that there are higher priorities, but I don't see any reason to discard the idea outright when it could be placed in the 'something to look at if there is ever time to do so' pile.

Quoting the majority of this post for emphasis, as it's pretty much word for word what I would have said.
I don't really particularly care if hacking is relatively a small-scale thing; I and many others would certainly be willing to pay real money in the store simply to ensure our characters will always be around. If my mesmer got deleted - which would take his entire Hall of Monuments/GW2 links with it - I would no longer have reason to wait around until 2011 for GW2, meaning I'd probably be gone for good.
I might have looked on this topic differently months ago, but the recent rash of hacks that hit close to home have made me willing to spend money. Seriously Anet - I will pay money for this.

I'd even be willing to pay for it, as long as it's a ONE-TIME payment for your entire account (say like €2,50 tops)
I'd lock all my characters PERMANENTLY. If I ever needed a new character, I'd buy another slot. But I don't
I really want the option to get "peace of mind" about the safety of my characters.

I would use it. Ive seen to many times here on guru alone where someone logs on only to find their charicters gone. Let alone all their stuff. (weekend of 2/21/09 ring any bells?)
Yes I would defiantly use it, and I think more then 90% of my guild would as well.

sorry if this has been mentioned:
In your con section you talked about a person gettign ur info and locking all your characters.
What could also happen is a person goes onto your account and creates characters and locks those so u have brand new characters u dont want for 6 months.
my suggestion is that a character can be locked only after 10 days of being created to avoid this.

Wow, this thread is old. But /signed all the same.
Nowadays, all that matters to me is my HoM. Take all my gear and steal all my plat, don't really care. I can make it back fairly easy. Having to go through the title grind again? I'd probably never play GW again first. My main's hall is full and ready for GW2, and I'd happily lock my main for eternity if I could. Or lock his HoM anyway.
As for locking all my other slots by someone else, easier to get a new slot, or to just play with the characters you have, then to lose a 3+ yr old char.

Gaile isn't the community rep any more, and although I can't remember specifics, I think some of the things Linsey has done or talked about planning to do have been things that Gaile shot down in the past.
It's worth keeping the topic raised. As I said earlier in the thread, it doesn't need to be the top priority, but if it's in the priority list somewhere it may eventually happen... or be put into GW2.

I am well aware she is not, was at the party. Since you cannot remember the specifics I went back 2 pages of this thread for you:
Since I have already told you that the programming team is not available to add this feature, the only point of discussion I have with the team is "They would like this, and they are willing to pay." As I've said before, the cost of programming and implementation (which takes members of several teams) and the cost of support is prohibitive. The business team would have to consider a lot of factors (such as what it would cost to develop, how many would be likely to use it, those saying they'd pay, and then deciding not to do so), and even then it may simply be impossible to add this feature no matter how many were potentially able and willing to pay a fee for the service.
GW2 suggestion sure great idea, but that is not what this thread is about.

Whether the idea has been shot down or not is not an issue. Sardelac is a place for posting ideas/wants for this game. People want this feature, which is why there's a thread here that's remained open.
(This means stop talking about whether or not it matters if this idea was shot down.)

Katsumi,
Basically you are telling me that I am not allowed to have an opinion on the subject that is based on the history of the topic/thread. The fact that it was shot down is important and the reasons why even more so. Which makes this an excellent suggestion for GW2 since it is still in development, I think this would be one of those items that fall squarely in the category of something ANET did wrong with GW and can fixed by putting it in GW2(hopefully for free). The programming team is available and actively working on GW2 and the programming and implementation is ongoing and would not cost much more to inlcude at this point in the development. The only problem would be the support costs, but in the end this may be a straw dog if they made it irreversable with no option to reverse it. Pay for another slot and do not permantly lock it.
Considering the size of the live team working on GW1 it is most likey a pipe dream for GW1.
At least I did not ask for the thread to be locked as others did.

No, ding dong, I didn't mean it like that. :P
Often, threads in Sardelac will degenerate into "IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN" arguments, which are against the guidelines for this forum. I'm just trying to keep this thread away from that.
Considering the current state of the Live team, there are almost no ideas in the forum that will be implemented. But still, we post since we want them to know what we want and how we feel. Just trying to reinforce that idea a little more.
And if you take offense at me calling you a ding dong...

Its still a good idea and there certainly nothing wrong with pushing for it. Thats what forums are for.

Katsumi never said you arent allowed to your opinion. And no one is or should tell you that you arent allowed to your opinion.
Problem is you cant distinguish the difference between having an opinion about this topic and telling people to stop talking about it. Its HYPOTCRITICAL to tell people to stop talking about this subject(thus they cant have their opinions) and yet you cry thinking someone is telling you arent allowed to express yours.
Seems easy to me. Im not telling you to stop reading the thread. You have the right to not read the thread if you dont want to see this subject continued.

If only for those people who do share accounts, in my old guild there was a member who shared an account with his younger brother. In those circumstances the protection of a lock is far better than keeping two eyes on whether your younger brother is about to delete your smelly guild hall dood with the purty armour. And yes I would lock a good number of my toons

Character locking would be a good idea however I doubt we would be required to pay for it as it would in no way infringe on the servers.
However when your account gets hacked, the people come on, salvage your armor, strip your storage and leave. It would be better to lock a character as well as whatever armor and weapons they have on them at that time.
